MANCHESTER THEATRICAL has just returned from Palace Theatre & Opera House Manchester having witnessed HIGH-CAMP-PERFECTION from the 2024-25 Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Show cast. We 1st saw Rocky Horror in this venue way back in time (warp) - 1993 !
There’s been many people donning the famous Frank fish-nets. It would appear Jason can’t keep them off! X25 years ago I interviewed him at the Birmingham Rep when the show was celebrating x25 years. He was full of glee and sparkly eyed at the thought of shaking off his squeaky neighbours / Joseph Dreamcoat persona and try a new edgy look and direction.
Richard O’Brien was on hand back then for a quick interview & explained the appeal of his cult masterpiece ‘You need to look at fables / tales such as Hansel & Gretel, the rise & fall of Adam and Eve… for it is hear that explains the longevity of Rocky Horror.’
The Show revolves around x2 Denton High School Sweet Hearts who stumble across a strange Mannor House full of Miss-fits when their car has a blow out tyre. All they want is to use a phone to get help….. but they are on a much bigger journey of discovery and we are all invited along for a truly enlightening ride.
Jason tonight performed with gusto. It’s been a while since we have seen someone perform with 110% conviction and really embed into their character. Tonight he was living & breathing Frank. So convincing I was giddy watching his enthusiasm! He lost a heel x30 mins into the show and he spent most of the 1st act turning this on stage miss-hap into endless titters! You really had to be there - but absolute hilarity ensued for old Rocky fans like myself - and Rocky virgins. My fave part was how dismissive he was of Janet and clearly the rest of the Palace audience picked up on this too.
Ofcourse it takes a village to put on a show like this - all supporting each other throughout. BRAD - Connor Carson plays nerdy boyfriend - and fiancé to his JANET - Lauren Chia who are sickly sweet and their singing complimented each other well. ROCKY - Morgan Jackson is a triple threat and Jason seemed to relish prancing around with his new creation.
We give the 50th Anniversary of Rocky an easy 5***** & know people will still be doing the TIME WARP in another 50.
