The Royal Exchange Theatre
29th November till 25 January
*** Thunderclouds opened and the rain came down. Equally matched with thunderous applause ***
*** The forecast is very good for Royal Exchange’s - SINGIN IN THE RAIN ***
*** YOU’LL BE SWOONING IN THE RAIN! ***
*** One of the best choreographed shows we have EVER seen ***
We donned our waterproofs and brollies to brave the rainy streets of Manchester to enter the world of SINGIN IN THE RAIN at the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre. So glad we did!
Signs on entrance warned that we may get wet! …..& if you are in the lower areas of this intriguing theatre then you WILL get wet. Before the show started some audience members did pop on a poncho.
The story of a film studio moving its main box office stars from silent movies to talkies. Hitches happen and important changes have to be made!
To transport us to 1925 the main floor performance space is a huge period Film Studio lamp and we loved this subtle idea that everything we are watching is literally in the spotlight. The classic hits - Good Mornin, Make um’ laugh, Moses & Singin in the rain are performed with gusto and excellent timing and dreamy choreo.
Our lead playing swoon worthy Don Lockwood - LOUIS GAUNT reminds us of a young Billy Zane. He IS a TRIPPLE threat. When he dances he literally glides and flies through the air.
Cosmo Brown - DANNY COLLINS is hilarious. As a side kick he excels and has us lolling all night. Perfect tap dancing and a zest for life - this performer holds your attention throughout.
Squeaky sounding New Yorker Lina Lamont - LAURA BALDWIN plays her role as a bubbly viper - sniping at everyone and anything in her way and we were on the edge of our seat waiting for her next move.
Kathy Seldon - CARLY MERCEDES DYER has a lovely clarity to her singing and performs with Louis with magnetism.
Here at Manchester Theatrical we want to go to the theatre and be wowed. Theatre that excites is pretty rare. The tingly theatre moments where you're questioning if you could have done the scene in a better way. Designed it tighter. Created lighting with more impact. With this production there’s very little note wise. It’s simply a moment of theatre where each department is choreographed so well everything is just so seamless - you can’t help but be sucked into the adventure unfolding in front of you. Story telling that’s engaging and bursting with life. This show oozes with confidence from every department. Director Raz Shaw has created something truly remarkable and memorable.
Who doesn’t love a water spectacular finale. ….The costume department flexed their muscles throughout - & we loved the full casts medley at the finale with bright blue & yellow waterproofs.
The fluid steps of Louis & Danny created a storm at Manchester royal exchange theatre.
This much loved musical feels fresh and with this energised cast we also managed to skip through the rain with a song in our heart on the way home.
Book now for a night of memorable theatre in the heart of Manchester this Christmas.
