*** Light-hearted madness and not a show for the faint hearted ***
This was a show I really wanted to love, as on paper it has drag, cabaret, and musicals all rolled into one. To be fair a lot of the audience loved it, however for me it just fell short. The intro seemed to quite literally drag but managed to raise a few titters. Following this came the highlight of the show. This consisted of phantom’s crashing chandelier and Miss Saigon’s helicopter flying over our heads. Then sadly we returned to a clunky poorly produced show.
Our host for the night was ‘Fatt Butcher’, who set out how the night’s camp shenanigans would run. She was joined by some other gurls including Alanna Boden Dahliah Rivers and Blü Romantic. They gave some ‘unique’ retellings of showstoppers from an array of musical stalwarts from Wicked to Les Mis and Hamilton to Miss Saigon. Dahliah Rivers rendition of ‘The little Mermaid’ was fun and has had us searching in Argos for a bubble machine. Another camp moment was Blü Romantic’s interpretation of Hamilton’s song ‘You’ll be back’ who served us a Trump-esq version of the king.
The first half of the show also consisted of a singalong to ‘Phantom’ moment. The audience were given the song lyrics for the song. Sadly, our row didn’t get any lyrics with other audience member either sharing or without as there wasn’t enough to go round. Surely print enough out, if you want audience participation! The second half of the show was a ‘wicked mega mix’! This consisted of a 20minute/1-hour abridged variation of ‘Wicked’ with lots of artistic licence. The ‘Fat’ jokes that ran throughout the night really should be cut. They were repetitive and got boring early on, and they boarded on becoming offensive.
The team have brought us their previous shows such as ‘C*ck of Ages’ and ‘Oklahomo!’ Unpopular is light-hearted madness and not a show for the faint hearted, with plenty of naughty references only for adult ears! The show is great for anyone of the RuPaul generation and lovers of all things queer. Our show was sold-out, and with just a handful of tickets left for tonight at only £22. Pick up a ticket and make your own conclusions or pop down Manchester’s Canal street which is only a stone’s throw away and catch a great quality drag show there.
