Waitress tells the tale of x3 Pie Shop workers - Jenna - LUCIE JONES, Dawn - EVELYN HOSKINS, & Becky – BERNADETTE BANGURA. This is a story about friendships and the joys of motherhood. Waitress serves up a comedy romance with bittersweet tenderness. It covers relationships that have turned sour, mates that lift each other up, there an affair with a hot new doctor in town - and explores modern dating. Having begun its theatrical debut in 2015 the show has won countless awards and had its offerings served up on Broadway to critical acclaim as well as a previous West-end run in 2021 and UK tour in 2021-2022.
Sara Bareilles mixes Butter, Sugar, Flour – love, heartache and friendship – The perfect recipe for Waitress the Musical. Sara Bareilles is a Grammy Award winning artist and songwriter and has written the Music & Lyrics, so you know you are in for a musical treat.
Lucie Jones rekindles the role of Jenna – we saw her bake this role back in 2021 when she last toured the show and this helping is just as fresh. She lavishly serves us some great vocals during ‘What baking can do’, ‘Everything changes’ and ‘Bad idea’. When she belts out her showstopper ‘She used to be mine’ many audience members were reaching for their handkerchiefs to blot away a tear.
Wearing the apron of Dawn again is the wonderful Evelyn Hoskins who we fell in love with during her role in 42Balloons. Evelyn also played Dawn during the 2021/22 UK tour. She and her fellow geek and admirer ‘Ogie’ played by Mark Anderson are standout cast of the night. They are perfectly in tune and have some wonderful moments with perfect comedy timing.
Bernadette Bangura gives us a no-holds-barred, all or nothing ‘Becky’ she is fierce and fiery and delivers some hilarious one-liners. Les Dennis potters about as ‘Old Joe’ the pie shop owner. Dan Partridge plays the hot new Dr. Pomattter and we all wanted a slice of him. Dan O’Brian as Cal and Mark Willshire as Earl complete the principal cast.
The first half of the offering covers a lot of ground and can be slow paced 1hour 30mins. The second half ramps up and the story builds with a wedding and tying up of our lead's stories. I feel like this show - like the pies that are referenced every few minutes needed trimming. There’s plenty of sweet moments to keep you entertained in an 80’s romcom kinda way. Yes - the ensemble flow beautifully and add to the telling of our leads, it just felt like a key ingredient was missing! The audience did, however rise in a standing ovation.
This 10-year anniversary serving makes us fall in love with this musical all over again. Fill your face with a big ol’ slice of WAITRESS pie and get yourself a seat at the Lowry showing until Saturday 31st October. Tickets via below or theatre box office.
