This is camp off the scale. Our queens (Dianas) serve up a right royal romp, with enough attitude to penetrate the walls of Windsor castle. You’ve been waiting for a drag queen to play the people’s princess for a longtime and then five come along at once.
With a stella cast, this sure should big a five-star production. Unfortunately, the buzz we felt waiting for curtain up sadly just fizzled out. there are a few too many production issues that really tarnished these Crown Jewels. The backing track is so loud that it drowns out the cast voices. The lighting was dull, often leaving members of the cast in total darkness. The dancer's whist skilled, seemed like an afterthought who had been told to come in their own clothes rather than designed get ups offering some glamour and glitz that would have lifted rather than distracted from the show.
Our line-up of Dianas included Rose, who delivers in aces. She has some powerhouse vocals; she truly is the triple treat of the night and the one to watch. Priyanka looks sensational, and a beautiful Courtney Act gave us some great vocals and she knows how to slay a stage. We adore Divina De Campo and have enjoyed her in Hedwig as well as Sponge Bob. Tonight, we continue our love affair with her voice perfect as usual. Kitty Scott-Claus is also a fave of ours since being a finalist in Rupaul’s Drag Race UK 2023, this is our first time seeing her in the flesh and she did not disappoint. Sometime the melodies with all the queens could be a bit pitchy, which does beg the question - would tonight have been better with just one Diana?
Judi Dench won an Oscar for playing Queen Elizabeth I for around 8minuets. Keala Settle plays Queen Elizabeth II for roughly the same amount of time over two songs, and she won our heart. She got a well-deserved standing ovation and left us all wanting more.
Lucinda Lawrence portrayal of CPB (Camilla) is hilarious and she plays her to a tee, matched alongside her king - Noel Sullivan who plays Charles. The pair give plenty of comedic content and demonstrate their art brilliantly.
This show is more performance rather than a history lesson. There is little plot and dialogue so there isn't much glue holding the show together. The night bounces from track to track, some tracks rocked some tracks flopped, some great solos, then some not so good. We had high expectations for this show, with a bit of reworking here and there, this show could be great, but sadly on the whole, tonight wasn't for us. We agree with the queens' final statement that - Diana would have 'effing loved her life portrayed by a load of drag queens - book now and make you own minds up.
