Just home from ERIC & ERN at The Lowry. This has been the 2nd time we have seen the two masters of merriment - JONTY STEPHENS (ERIC) & IAN ASHPITEL (ERN) in full control of the Lowry full house.
This show celebrates the joint centenary of MORECOMBE & WISE. You have classic sketches and comedy that’s the bedrock of uk culture. They were kings of comedy. They still are to many people. They’ve transcended generations and for good reason.
Their names are embedded in your reviewers formative years. Comedy cream rises to the top…. & these two were at the top of the pile from 1941 > 1984 - x43 years of laughter. So as I write this x42 years after Eric’s passing I’d hope their classic jokes will be remembered for another x42 years. I can’t think of anyone better to carry on their legacy. If you close your eyes - it’s Eric & Ern talking. …..If you open your eyes - it’s Eric & Ern!
When the double act ended their spirits really have been able to live on. Great comedy lasts the test of time. They really were from a golden age of laughter. You had all the sketches and nuance’s down. We saw a similar show - ‘THE LAST LAUGH’ a few months ago in Manchester. Another night of impersonations that were exceptional.
In a theatre world full of nostalgia this show really can take you back in time and have you lolling as you did back then. What more can you want on a wet / windy night - SUNSHINE ! JONTY & IAN delivered. The duo clearly adore their alter egos and this helps them put the polished shine into their SUNSHINE act.
As we left the auditorium a lady and her husband said ‘I can’t believe how good they were. It’s like Eric & Ern were with us tonight. I’d see that again.’ So don’t just take our word for it.
