*** Toe Tappingly Good ***

*** We were clapping' to the tappin' all night long ***

This glittering revival of Top Hat is full of elegant costumes, sumptuous sets and exquisite dancing. Based on the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers 1935 film, this musicale is full of old school Hollywood glamour. The plot isn’t too deep with a story full of romance. Based on mistaken identities that result in plenty of comedic moments that are toe tappingly good. The story is light hearted and had the audience skipping their way home into the spring air.

Phillip Attmore plays Jerry Travers the Broadway star. Phillip soon gets to show us plenty of flashy steps and had the audience lapping up his every move. He meets Dale Tremont played by Nicole-Lily Baisden when he keeps her awake one night. Nicole-Lily sparkles with charisma throughout. James Hume plays a camp Horace Hardwick who is Jerry’s sidekick. Emma Williams plays his wife Madge Hardwick who is also best friends with Dale. Madge is a gorgeous battleaxe and Emma plays her with relish, a great stand out performance. Whenever Emma and James were on stage there were plenty of laughs and giggles. A chase unfolds as Jerry chases Dale to Venice where plenty of mishaps and drama occurs whilst chasing each other's (Top Hat and) tails.

The rest of the cast are a joy to watch and truly look like they are having as much fun as we had watching. Everyone's performance was as highly polished as their tap shoes. We loved the stylised 1930’s feel. The costumes and sets truly transported us back to that golden era.

The choreography, by Kathleen Marshall, was both elegant and energetic. We were clapping' to the tappin' all night long. Kathleen has created some of the most beautiful routines that you we have seen in a long time. There are plenty of fast dynamic tap dance sequences that the cast made look effortless. This is all set along to the toe taping score by Irving Berlin with many timeless classics to enjoy such as ‘Cheek to Cheek’, ‘Top Hat, White Tie and Tales’ and the showstoppers ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ and ‘Let’s face the music and dance’. You will leave the theatre smiling from ear to ear and humming the song all the way home. So pop on your Top Hat and Tails and tap your way down to The Lowry.
